| Since Sam Tomkins came back to Wigan he has shown a lot of inventiveness when mixing about with the play when on the 3rd/4th/or 5th tackle.
I think the days of him breaking from deep are gone because he undoubtedly seems to have lost some pace, so I think it is time for him to move to halfback where a short burst of speed could be more beneficial to the team.
Some fans say he would have to do more tackling in the halves than at fullback, maybe so but they are not those full on when a big forward is running at him at pace. When tackling on the front line there are usually more than one player involved in the tackle.
The reason I am saying all this is because in my opinion Sam is always going to be only a big collision from a layoff, after the first few matches he played when he came back he has been taken off early, missed a match or two or left out because of concerns about certain pitches.
That is why I think even though it may sound daft I think he is not as exposed at halfback and it also gives Wigan a chance to get two halfbacks together who could really click.
Someone posted on another thread that in Dom Manfredi, Wigan could have a player who could turn out to be a great fullback. all we need now is another winger.

| Not this year IMO but it could be an option down the line. He's come back in at fullback and done very well but it's always worthwhile evaluating your options. The one thing I would say looking at the team is could that option not be taken away by Shorrocks form? He looks a fantastic talent. He's confident and organised and looks ready to grasp games by the nuts.
Give us 2 years or so and I'd like to think we're looking at the following-
1-Tomkins
6-Williams
7-Shorrocks

| This Sam Tomkins to the halves is nearly as bad as people banging on about Ryan Hampshire.

Think Tierney is woeful at Full back. Rewatch Friday, consistently in the wrong position for our "shift/out the back" play, which our structured attack is built around. Zero passing game. Was similar at the start of the year hence being dropped and Sarge going there.
God forbid an injury to Sam this year, I'd play Gels and Gildart centres and Sarge FB.

I don't think Tierney is good enough at FB either. He's got good pace and is a decent finisher which makes him a good back up option on the wing.

| He's proving himself to be a good winger Tierney but he's awful as an attacking full back. He's a good athlete but his basic skills with ball in hand are very poor and he doesn't get involved enough. We should have put Sarginson at full back on Friday and he should be first choice back up whenever Sam isn't available.

I think it was a difficult choice on Friday. If Sarginson had played full back who would have played centre? We didn't even know if Charnley would pass the late fitness test so it might have been a case of no choice for SW.
If Gelling was fit he'd play and so would Gildart for me. That would leave Sarginson to cover FB and Tierney to cover wing spots if necessary.
If we ever get anywhere near a full strength squad it's a real embarrassment of riches. With Sarginson leaving, I still think we're a top class 3/4 short of having our squad spot on.
