Where the hell did this ridiculous phrase come from. Serious question btw!

When you win the league you are 'champions' however when you win the cup you are the 'cup holder' or 'cup winner'.

Nobody in the long and great history of the challenge cup including Wigan, Saints, Widnes, Bradford and Leeds etc have ever concocted this BS phrase that you guys are spouting.

Get it right please. You have won the cup and in fact retained it. You are not the Champions of a cup competition. It is the incorrect terminology.

Congratulations btw. Great performance at Wembley but nobody is the 'champion' of a cup competition, they are the winners or holders. Get it right please.

He makes a very valid point, its not taking away anything from you winning the CC but pointing out that doesn't make you champions! The Champions are the team which wins the Grand Final.

I do find it cringeworthy to be honest. It was something an emotional Lee Briers said in a tongue tied interview (nothing particularly wrong with that) but it then caught on.

We are not Champions.

Posted it because some of you guys are still typing it three weeks later!!!! Mostly to console yourselves and make you feel better after that display and last week as well. I can't blame you for that. But you aint the champions of anything. Back to back cup winners yes.

Nothing to get worked up about really and I do agree that we are not champions. The only champions are those who win their respective Grand Finals. In defence the only time I have heard the phrase (apart from RLFans) was following the 2009 CC final, If I remember rightly it may have started on a local commercial radio station or possibly at the home coming parade by an ex DJ of the local radio station.

and perhaps the op should realise that not everyone on this site calls us champions, just a minority! you know like were not allowed to tar you or wigan fans all when we say anything about you!

A champion (identical to the French, from the late Latin campio) is the victor in a challenge, contest or competition.

That's that cleared up. Considering the cup has english, french, welsh, hull and russian teams you could put forward an argument of european champions.




P.S i agree winners sounds more appropriate.

What Lee Briers said in a emotional interview was ,we are the champions of the challenge cup,i should know ive watched it 87 times..
