Up until last season (until they signed little pommie sam) Barry McKenzies second club has always been South Sydney Rabbitohs.
In the past I have always had a soft spot for the club and all it stood for. Souths have always been a side whose area covers the south and south eastern working class suburbs of Sydney. Souths have always been a club of great history and have been a part of the game for as long as I've followed it. The 'cardinal and Myrtle' jersey is iconic in the world of Aussie footy. Along with many other footy fans Barry McKenzie loved the way the club refused to die when they were in financial strife and the way they took on the NRL and News Ltd when they got booted out at the end of the 1990's.
Then came Rusty Crowe.
I like the way the bloke pumped his $ into the club and made them a big name again.
What I dont like is the way Russell Crowe is using his American 'friends' to plug his investment at every opportunity. You have Jon Bon Jovi on stage wearing a Bunnies jumper. You have Oprah Winfrey in a Souths ball cap. You have Pamela Anderson watching a Souths game.
Souths have also been given most of the Friday night free to air games. St Choke Illa*arra despite being the current premiers havent got any free to air friday night games for the first 5 weeks.
Russell Crowe is in danger of making Souths into the modern day 'silvertails' just like Manly side that were so despised back in the 70's and 80's. To this day I know a lot of people who go for their own club and 'whoever is playing Manly'
I wouldnt like Souths to end up like Manly but I can see a lot of footy fans turning against them. The club is starting to move too far away from the values and traditions that made people like me adopt them as their second team.
Rage over.

| Man with money and global profile pumps money into failing club, gets them and the sport an international audience with some of the most popular celebrities on the planet.
Yes, the man's a disgrace.

| Wouldn't really classify it as an 'Epic fail'... more of a 'not really concentrating' type thing...

| No, I would, it's an epic fail.
On the topic of Crowe, why don't we sell clubs to celebrities from the US.
'Hello welcome to Castleford Tigers, and it's chairman, Hugh Hefner!'

Good idea
I suggest Stevie Wonder purchases Huddersfield Giants.
Looks like he already designed your 2011 jersey....

What a load of rubbish as usual.
Russell Crowe is getting Souths some amazing media attention all over the world, and you think that's a bad thing? WTF?!
I don't think clubs are that bothered about fans of other clubs making them their second team. I think he's more bothered about getting more "first" teamers.
*Oh, a St Choke Illawarra? Didn't they win the league?! Kinda stupid thing to say*

I think Hugh would have fit in more at the Bunnies than Rusty!
