BILLY Slater does not need to give evidence at Thursday night's judiciary hearing because the biting case against Bulldogs prop James Graham is considered so compelling that he is tipped to receive one of the longest bans in NRL history.
A distraught Graham is expected to plead guilty to the ungraded contrary conduct charge after being referred directly to the tribunal to answer allegations by Slater that the England star bit his ear in the 26th minute of Sunday's grand final.
By not grading the charge, the match review committee has indicated that the incident was worse than a grade-five offence, which would have seen Graham facing a seven-match ban. There are suggestions the suspension could ''go down in the annals of history as one of the longest ever''.

A tad hysterical if they do hand out a huge ban. There are far worse offences on a rugby field than the damage Graham inflicted. I've seen several players have their jaws shattered by deliberate leading elbows (Moriarty on Waddell for example) which were far worse in their intent and outcome than Graham's offence. Not saying he doesn't deserve a decent ban, but a bit of perspective would be good.

has there ever been a biting case in Super league? I remember Cas V Whitehaven when Brad Davis accused Carl Sice (sp) of biting, but I think that was more gamesmanship to delay the clock. Billy the kid is the golden boy in Oz though, wouldn't surprise me to see Jammer get a big un.

Quite often the allegations are removed because the player who gets bitten has to provide pretty much all the evidence, and not many want to do that in the cold light of day. The difference in this case is that Graham was clearly visible going for Slater's ear on national TV.

When at Huddersfield, Chris Thorman was called to Red Hall to answer a charge of biting. The club used the doctor in evidence to successfully prove that where the bite marks were, the victims fingers were that far down Thormans throat that an involuntary reflex had been been triggered.
I don't think Gnasher Graham can use the same defence though.

Canterbury prop James Graham will plead not guilty to a biting charge at the NRL judiciary on Thursday night.

But it is not just about the extent of the damage done.
Its the intent and how it reflects on the game, high shots happen, players run in with raised elbows but that can be questionable technique or a dozen other things that occasionally leads to a bad injury, if it is a clear cut an assault on a player the injured player can pursue the matter in the Courts for damages and have been rubbed out of the game in Australia at least.
Its hard to accidentally bite some one is the point I am trying to make, if you think a small cut is not an issue would it change your mind if the recipient picked up Hepatitis or more serious lifelong condition from a bite? |

Elliot Whitehead got 5 games for biting at the end of last year. Mitigating circumstances (he was concussed when he did it) reduced the ban slightly otherwise he'd have been looking at 8 matches. |

The fact that the Slater isn’t even needed at the judiciary and the incident hasn’t been graded, it doesn’t look good for Graham and I expect a very lengthy ban. I know it shouldn’t influence the decision but, if he is found guilty I believe the ban will be more severe due to the incident occurring in the GF.
